The status of women in India is not that encouraging. She is discriminated at birth, in education, in property rights, in aspects of health, decision-making and always lives under the shadow of men, be it the husband/father/son. Such a situation does not augur well for a civilized society. The status of women in the proposed project area is no different. With little or no education, poverty, no employment skills and the status tag of dalits the women in the project area at Sendivakkam live in abject poverty and languish in their homes. Given such a situation it was felt, that something should be done to improve the plight of women, rather empower women in this area. Empowerment of women, cannot be seen in one dimension, rather it should be comprehensive.
